Crime Scenario
West Jaintia hills district is one
of the oldest districts of the State. It extends from Assam in the north
to Bangladesh in the South. Law and order is stable in the district.
Police is deployed in all the major strategic localities of the district
to give quickest possible Police response to the needy. Crime reported
is increasing every year for various reasons including the awareness of
the common public and the prompt response by the Police.
Crimes are reported in the following heads including petty thefts,
family disputes, land disputes, robbery, dacoity, rape and other women
and children related cases, murder, NDPS, traffic related cases
including accidents, cyber crime, militant related cases, foreigners
act, border crimes, smuggling etc. Crimes are investigated
scientifically and thoroughly to bring the culprits under the ambit of
law.
Efforts are taken for the prevention of the crime including awareness
creation to the common public on regular crimes and also the newly
reported crimes like ATM/ credit card frauds etc, activation of the
VDP’s, association of the village durbars, intelligence collection,
creation of specialized units like Cyber crime cell and Anti Narcotic
cell, check on the liquor and drugs users, monitoring the movement of
the criminals etc.
Women and Child related cases are given priority and Women PS
investigates the cases. An Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) is created
for human/ child trafficking related issues.
